RV Rental Insurance

You have decided to take the family out to Yellowstone National Park or maybe a drive up the Washington coastline and have been planning the trip for months. You have a folder full of travel brochures and a map highlighted with the places you want to stop. For this trip you have planned to rent a RV and have reserved your unit. Everything is planned and ready. But have you insured your vacation?

Driving a RV will be a new experience even if you are an experienced over the road trucker or have driven a motor home before. Every motor home has its own special quirks which make it unique to drive. There is a big difference between driving a class C over a class A motor home. And if you are towing your RV, there will be a whole new set of rules to follow. You can be safe and will probably not experience any problems but the likelihood of being involved in an accident is higher than if you were driving a car.

The next thing to understand about your RV is that the locks used to secure the entry door and the storage compartments are not always the best. RV's are a thieves' magnet. A thief knows you have electronics, and camping equipment which can easily be sold and they know it can be easily stolen. You will be leaving your RV unoccupied for long periods of time and often in remote areas which are ideal conditions for a thief.

Your best protection is RV rental insurance. Sometimes your auto insurance policy will extend coverage to your rental; however, this coverage may be limited. Your best option is to purchase additional insurance for your trip.

One option for additional insurance is called Supplemental Liability Insurance. (SLI) This can be purchased through the insurance company used by your rental dealer to insure their rental units. One company which does offer SLI coverage is MBA Insurance.

The SLI option can allow you to increase your liability coverage above state minimum limits or the limits on your personal auto policy. For a small additional charge you can add coverage for loss of personal belongings and accidental death.

Renting a RV for your vacation is a cost efficient and fun way to explore our country. Paying attention to the details like insurance will help you have that carefree vacation you have planned for.
